Ashenfall is live — and for the first time in RuneScape’s 25-year history, it is live on consoles.
Jagex: The RuneScape Company announced today (Tuesday, September 15, 2026) that open-world survival and crafting game RuneScape: Dragonwilds has launched its 1.0 release on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. The company’s Cambridge press release calls it the franchise’s first-ever console release. The official Dragonwilds launch post confirms the same platform slate and marks the end of an 18-month Steam Early Access run that Jagex says sold more than 1.5 million copies.
What ships today
Dragonwilds is a separate experience from the RuneScape MMORPGs. Per Jagex, players adventure solo or in teams of up to four across Ashenfall — Gielinor’s previously unexplored continent — leveling skills, crafting gear and shelters, and wielding anima-rich magic for combat and gathering. The 1.0 build includes every Early Access update (Fellhollow, Dowdun Reach, Umbral Sands) plus a fourth major update, Scorned Wilderness, which Jagex says brings the opening core narrative — the Kuldra Saga — to its conclusion, capped by end-game boss Kuldra, the God-Eater.
Cross-play is supported on all platforms at launch, according to both Jagex and the Dragonwilds team post. Worlds can be toggled for cross-play when hosted, and invite codes can join sessions from the world browser.
Where to play — and subscription day-one access
Jagex’s press release lists day-one availability as follows:
- PC: Steam, Epic Games Store, and Jagex Launcher (Digital Standard and Deluxe)
- PlayStation 5: retail digital, plus PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium tiers
- Xbox Series X|S: retail digital, plus day-one on Xbox Game Pass Premium, Ultimate, and PC Game Pass tiers
- Nintendo Switch 2: Digital Standard Edition
Physical Standard and Deluxe editions for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S are slated for Q4 2026, Jagex says. Switch 2 is digital-only in the launch materials cited here.
Roadmap beyond day one
Executive Producer Jesse America framed 1.0 as the culmination of months of console work and “only really getting started.” CEO Jon Bellamy called it “one of the biggest days in RuneScape’s history,” positioning Dragonwilds as a third franchise pillar alongside existing RuneScape games.
Jagex has already confirmed the first post-launch major update, Luminance, for December 2026, with a 2027 roadmap to be revealed at RuneFest in October. The Dragonwilds launch post also points players at a Twitch badge campaign running through October 4, 2026 (30 minutes of watched Dragonwilds streams) and notes the team fixed 2,665 bugs on the path to gold.
As of writing (evening September 15, 2026, America/Chicago), platform list, first-console-release claim, Early Access sales figure, Scorned Wilderness / Kuldra framing, subscription day-one access, physical Q4 window, and Luminance / RuneFest roadmap notes are taken from Jagex’s Sep 15 press release and the official Dragonwilds launch post. No conflicting launch-day caveats appeared in those primary sources at write time.
