Capcom Plans AI-Generation RE Engine REX

Capcom is detailing plans to evolve its proprietary RE Engine into an “AI-generation game engine” under a company initiative called REX, according to Video Games Chronicle (October 3, 2026), citing programmer Satoshi Ishida’s talk at Capcom Open Conference RE:2026. PC Gamer’s same-day writeup stresses the same framing: an engine for the AI era of development tooling, not a shortcut that floods shipped games with generative art.

Caveat first: this is a productivity, tools, performance, and QA story. Capcom’s VP of game development platform and AI solutions, Shinichi Inoue, has previously said the company views AI “not for creating art, but for unleashing the potential of creators,” and that Capcom was not using AI tools to generate art. Coverage also restates Capcom’s line that it “will not implement assets generated by AI into our game content,” while using AI to “enhance efficiency and boost productivity” in the pipeline. Do not read REX as a green light for AI-drawn characters or environments in Resident Evil or other Capcom releases.

Ishida framed REX as Capcom’s answer to modern triple-A timelines — improving performance, tools, development efficiency, and QA. Moving toward a more common programming language should make the engine easier for AI systems to understand, enabling automatic program creation and test plays that hunt for bugs. Capcom also floated making some technologies publicly available to help with AI training. PC Gamer’s breakdown of the six REX-linked programs (including data-handling Re:Dox, AI-assisted tool optimization, RE: Runtime group animation, and RE: Flows mechanic prototyping) matches that tools-first reading.

RE Engine debuted with Resident Evil 7 in 2017 and has powered nearly 30 Capcom titles since. For US audiences already tracking how major publishers talk about generative tooling — including RCG’s prior coverage of Ubisoft’s Motherbrain AI game-making trademark filings — Capcom’s conference is a clearer productivity roadmap with an explicit no-AI-assets guardrail.

There is no consumer street date attached to REX. Treat it as internal engine roadmap news, not a patch note for a specific 2026 SKU. Capcom’s recent commercial run (Resident Evil: Requiem, Pragmata, Onimusha: Way of the Sword among titles cited in English coverage) is context for why the publisher is investing in pipeline speed, not proof that any named title already ships with generative art.

What we are not saying: we are not claiming Capcom will ship AI-generated character art, inventing a REX consumer release date, or equating “AI-generation game engine” with a ChatGPT-written campaign. Report tools/QA productivity AI under REX; Capcom’s no-AI-assets stance stands.
