Rumor, Unverified: Activision May Reboot Halo at Sledgehammer, With Reports Split on a Master Chief Origin

PC | MacRumor, Unverified: Activision May Reboot Halo at Sledgehammer, With Reports Split on a Master Chief Origin

Rumor, unverified: Two Oct. 2 writeups — Polygon (Elijah Gonzalez, 12:02 p.m. EDT) and GameSpot (Darryn Bonthuys, 5:26 a.m. PT) — each relay a Rebs Gaming report that Activision is weighing reboot-leaning ideas for Halo after Xbox handed the franchise to the Call of Duty publisher. Neither outlet presents a greenlit game. The accounts conflict on how far any story reset would go, and Activision has not confirmed a title, window, or brief.

Per Polygon’s reading of Rebs, Activision is considering a hard reboot centered on Master Chief’s origin — potentially John-117’s UNSC abduction and early years as a child soldier, if some established canon holds. Rebs clarified, Polygon says, that the project has not been greenlit and is one of several avenues under discussion, including a softer pivot away from recent Halo Studios storylines. Polygon also relays that Sledgehammer Games prototyped a free-to-play multiplayer title and a single-player campaign in Infinity Ward’s engine before Xbox’s handover announcement.

GameSpot, also citing Rebs, frames a cleaner slate: Sledgehammer presented conceptual prototypes for a free-to-play multiplayer game and a story campaign in the Infinity Ward engine, and the studio is believed to lead. Rebs told GameSpot an earlier soft-reboot campaign idea that would skip Halo Infinite’s story without retconning established canon was discarded, that a sequel to Infinite is unlikely, and that “at least some” of Halo’s story would be rebooted. Nothing in that piece is presented as locked.

Those readings conflict. Polygon foregrounds a Master Chief origin hard reboot among several options; GameSpot stresses discarded soft-reboot plans and a partial story reboot without an origin-story lead. RCG is not choosing between them. Both pieces rest on the same single leaker chain, and both stress the rumor status.

Xbox’s Sept. 22 reset moved next Halo development to Activision under a purpose-built team separate from Call of Duty — see Xbox Confirms 268 Cuts; Halo→Activision. That memo did not name Sledgehammer, a reboot brief, or a release window.
