The new Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel comics finally have dates. Dynamite Entertainment says Buffy the Vampire Slayer #1 arrives on March 10, 2027, with Angel #1 following later that month, and Mark Russell’s Firefly relaunch now set for April 2027, as first reported by Bleeding Cool.
All three books were pulled from their original schedules earlier this year, with retailer orders cancelled and the titles set to be resolicited. Dynamite publisher Nick Barrucci said the Buffy delay came from the story growing: “Writer Kelly Thompson’s story for Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel evolved and became more ambitious, so we felt we needed to take a step back and up the page count.”
The bigger debuts are the payoff. Buffy #1 has 35 story pages and Angel #1 has 32, and both ship as 48-page issues at Dynamite’s standard $4.99. Thompson writes both series, with Stephen Byrne drawing Buffy and Giulia Giacomino drawing Angel. The two books are tightly linked for their first arc, and Thompson says it is “critical that readers read both” because together they “set the table” for a new situation for the characters. On her Substack, she described the launch as what it turned into: an event book that will “change the Buffyverse forever.”
Dynamite is also teasing a new villain, Leviathan, who appears on Clayton Crain’s partly censored variant cover for Angel #1, plus an even bigger reveal it promises will “shatter the Buffy fandom.”
Firefly, from writer Mark Russell and artist Lorenzo Re, was moved so the three titles could launch near each other. According to Screen Rant, the first issue follows Mal trying to keep Serenity flying while Simon and Kaylee pose as a married couple for a heist. “I think Firefly was what first exposed me to what a hollow concept genre can be,” Russell said.
“I know that these books being pushed back bummed fans out,” Barrucci said, “but once they have them in their hands, we think that they will love the fact that the books are bigger with more story and art!”
The new dates put the launches in the shows’ anniversary year: Buffy turns 30 in 2027 and Firefly turns 25. For more from the publisher, see how Dynamite’s Ben 10 comic topped 500,000 copies.
