Monster Hunter Rise Soft-Launches on Phones via Netflix

Capcom’s Monster Hunter Rise has quietly arrived on phones. The 2021 action RPG is now listed on the App Store and Google Play as Monster Hunter Rise Netflix, and as Eurogamer reports, it appears to be a soft launch in select regions such as the Philippines rather than a worldwide release.

You need an active Netflix membership to download and play it, but it isn’t a cloud stream. The game installs and runs natively on your phone or tablet, and it keeps online co-op for up to four hunters.

The store listing points to a few changes made for mobile. Challenge and Event Quests that used to be paid or limited-time downloadable content can now be unlocked by playing through the game. A new Recovery Button automatically picks the most useful item in your inventory based on your hunter’s health and status, so you don’t have to dig through menus mid-fight. Touch controls have also been rebuilt for each weapon type, and the visuals are adjusted for different screen sizes and aspect ratios.

Neither Capcom nor Netflix has announced when the mobile version will reach more countries. Soft launches like this are usually a way to test performance and controls on real devices before a wider rollout.

The timing is interesting. Tencent’s Monster Hunter Outlanders, an open-world survival game, is also due on mobile on October 29, so Capcom will soon have two very different Monster Hunter games on phones. Rise was first released on Nintendo Switch in March 2021 and later came to PC, PlayStation, and Xbox.

The mobile release follows a big sales milestone for the game. Capcom announced this week that Monster Hunter Rise has topped 20 million copies sold, as RCG reported: Monster Hunter Rise sales top 20 million copies. That puts it close behind Monster Hunter: World as one of the best-selling games in the series.
