The man who created Grand Admiral Thrawn is heading to the final frontier. IDW Publishing has announced Star Trek: Roc’s Egg, an original graphic novel written by Timothy Zahn, the author of Star Wars’ Thrawn trilogy. It’s his first Star Trek story, and it is set to release in October 2027, according to IDW’s announcement.

Zahn is teaming with artist Ángel Hernández, who has drawn Star Trek: Voyager – Homecoming, Godzilla: Here There Be Aliens, and Spider-Man. The story is a mystery set aboard Deep Space 9. IDW’s description reads: “Something is rotten on Deep Space 9. When a mysterious artifact known as a Roc’s Egg arrives on the station—and is seemingly destroyed in transit—a Federation JAG investigation is called in to uncover what really happened.”

The deeper the investigators dig, the stranger it gets, with “a secret auction, a station full of wealthy collectors and dangerous criminals, a priceless artifact that may not be what it seems, and a murder waiting to happen.” IDW calls it “a twisty new mystery set aboard Deep Space 9 where everyone has something to hide.”

Zahn says the project means a lot to him. “My association with Star Trek goes all the way back to 1966 and the original TV series. Now, after sixty years, I’ve been given the chance to add my own small grace note to that rich and vibrant symphony,” he said. “This is a huge honor and privilege, and one which I will always cherish.”

IDW senior group editor Heather Antos called the collaboration “genuinely a dream come true” and said Zahn’s “gift for intricate plotting, unforgettable characters, and mysteries that keep you guessing” makes him the right writer for a station “where everyone has a secret, everyone has an agenda.” As TrekMovie notes, Zahn is best known for Heir to the Empire and his work as a creative consultant on Disney+’s Ahsoka, and he won a Hugo Award for his novella Cascade Point.

Roc’s Egg is part of IDW’s celebration of Star Trek’s 60th anniversary, and it was announced a day after another big name joined the line, as RCG reported: Gates McFadden writes Star Trek: Crusher comic for IDW.
