The legendary French sci-fi anthology Metal Hurlant is going disco. Humanoids announced at New York Comic Con that the magazine’s very first special issue will be devoted to Daft Punk, the French electronic duo that split up in 2021.
The authorized special runs 272 pages of illustrations, comics, and articles exploring Daft Punk’s universe, according to the Humanoids store page. More than 30 comics creators contributed, including Laura Pérez, Malachi Ward, Matthew Sheean, Édouard Cour, Jonathan Djob Nkondo, and European superstar Zep. It also reprints two rock-fueled classic stories by Metal Hurlant co-founders Mœbius and Philippe Druillet.
Humanoids says each new short comic captures “a fragment of time in the duo’s narrative, sometimes directly, sometimes through metaphor,” mixed with articles on the lore, technology, and influence of Daft Punk and their peers. “The machines dream. The humans malfunction,” the publisher teases.
Pre-orders are open now. An exclusive edition has a cover by Cedric Hervet and Warren Fu, the duo behind the cover art and illustrations for Daft Punk’s 2013 album Random Access Memories, and it’s only available by pre-order. Pre-orders also come with digital access and arrive a month early, with copies expected in mid-January 2027. There are standard softcover, exclusive softcover, and exclusive hardcover editions, all with the same content.
There is one more perk for superfans. Humanoids is offering 80 VIP seats at “The Concert That Never Happened.” Fans who claim one will have their faces drawn by artist Florian Breuil and their names printed in a double-page spread that appears in every copy, The Beat reports.
Metal Hurlant was founded in Paris in 1975 by Mœbius, Druillet, and Jean-Pierre Dionnet. Humanoids launched its English-language quarterly edition in the U.S. in 2025, mixing new work with stories from its archives.
Archival comics are having a moment at indie publishers. RCG also covered Oni’s Citizen: Stardust taking on Fletcher Hanks’ Golden Age hero.
