Squadron 42 Hits Steam With a New Trailer and Q2 2027 Window

PC | Mac

Squadron 42 finally has a storefront. Cloud Imperium Games has opened the Steam page for its long-running single-player space combat game and released a new trailer, The Oath, alongside it. The page lists the release window as Q2 2027, and wishlists are open now.

Squadron 42 is the story-driven companion to Star Citizen. It is set in 2945, with the United Empire of Earth on the brink of collapse, and puts you in the boots of a rookie in the UEE Navy stationed aboard a capital ship. IGN notes that Ian Duncan plays the male version of the player character and Alix Wilton Regan plays the female version.

The rest of the cast is stacked. According to Eurogamer, the lineup includes Mark Hamill, Gary Oldman, Gillian Anderson, Ben Mendelsohn, Henry Cavill, Andy Serkis, John Rhys-Davies, Jonathan Bailey, Mark Strong, Damson Idris, Liam Cunningham and Jane Perry. The game runs on Cloud Imperium’s StarEngine.

What the Steam page shows

  • Developers: Cloud Imperium Games Ltd and Cloud Imperium Games Texas LLC
  • Publishers: Roberts Space Industries International Ltd and Roberts Space Industries LLC
  • Release: Q2 2027
  • Minimum PC specs: Windows 11, 16GB of RAM, a DirectX 11.1 graphics card with 8GB of VRAM, and 150GB of storage

The Q2 2027 window is not new, but this is the first time it has been attached to a real store listing. Cloud Imperium pushed the game back in August, and Eurogamer reports the studio pointed to the release of GTA 6 as the reason for the move. Development on Squadron 42 began in 2014, according to IGN.

Star Citizen, the persistent online universe that shares Squadron 42’s setting, crossed $1 billion in crowdfunding in May, Eurogamer notes. It still has no release window of its own.

A Steam page does not guarantee a ship date, but it is the clearest sign yet that Cloud Imperium is gearing up to sell the campaign to a wider PC audience. Steam has a way of surfacing details on games before launch, too. RCG covered how Steam’s API exposed achievements for more than 50 unreleased games last month.
