Magic: The Gathering's Marvel: Darkhold Destiny Brings Doctor Strange and Thor on April 9, 2027

Wizards of the Coast has revealed the third Marvel set for Magic: The Gathering, and this one comes with its own story. Magic: The Gathering | Marvel: Darkhold Destiny releases April 9, 2027, and it’s available to preorder now, Wizards announced. Prerelease events run April 2 through 8, according to Wizards’ store-support site.

The set was unveiled at a New York Comic Con panel on Friday. It leans into the mystic side of the Marvel Universe. In the setup, Dormammu and Hela use a page of the Darkhold to tear open the walls between realities. Marvel says the story spans nearly 30 dimensions and centers on four main characters: Doctor Strange, Thor, Hela and Dormammu. GameSpot adds Ghost Rider to the heroes’ side, and ComicsBeat lists the Scarlet Witch among the featured characters.

An original story this time

The new set follows Magic: The Gathering | Marvel Super Heroes, which released June 26, 2026, and Magic: The Gathering | Marvel’s Spider-Man, which launched Sept. 26, 2025. Those sets brought existing Marvel heroes and moments into Magic. Darkhold Destiny is different. Marvel calls it the first Universes Beyond set built around an original story and setting, written by Marvel and Wizards together.

That story continues in a new Marvel comic written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly. It tells the origin of a brand-new character created for the set. Marvel says the first chapter arrives digitally Feb. 26, and the print edition lands the week of the set’s April 9 launch. ComicsBeat reports the character is named Fraxie, citing a Bluesky post from Heidi MacDonald, The Beat’s editor-in-chief.

Cards, mechanics and products

Early reveals include The Darkhold itself, Hela, Mistress of Darkness, Gargantos, the Endbringer and a double-faced Magik card that flips into her Darkchild form. GameSpot reports that the set adds a mechanic called Vengeance, which lets players cast spells from the graveyard. It also says the Arcane spell subtype returns.

Booster Packs and Collector Boosters lead the lineup. Wizards also lists four Commander decks, four Collector’s Edition Commander decks, two Scene Boxes (Assault on Asgard and Skirmish at the Sanctum), a Bundle, the Arcanum Bundle, Draft Night and Prerelease packs. GameSpot says one of the Commander decks is built around the Midnight Sons. Wizards hasn’t posted prices for any Darkhold Destiny product on its announcement or product pages.

The panel had more Marvel news for this year. The Secret Lair Countdown Kit: Marvel’s History of Heroes, a 30-card drop of classic Marvel moments, goes on sale Nov. 2 at 9 a.m. PT for $199.99, Marvel says. Wizards also teased Secret Lair x Marvel: Doomsdrop, which mostly features Doctor Doom. Variety reports that fans who see Avengers: Doomsday on its opening weekend in Infinity Vision at Regal Cinemas will get an exclusive Doctor Doom card.

Magic’s crossovers aren’t limited to cards. Wizards is also working with Dark Horse on Mage of Zhalfir, a 12-issue Teferi comic.
