Jagex is not going ahead with RuneScape Reignited. In an update posted on October 15, creative director Mod Ryan said the studio is cancelling the fresh-start project less than two weeks after it was revealed at RuneFest, citing player feedback and a promise not to repeat past mistakes.
“It is clear that we missed the mark on this, and so we are not moving forward with it,” Ryan wrote on the official RuneScape news blog. The decision was also covered by GamesRadar+ and other outlets.
Why it died
Reignited would have asked everyone to begin again on a blank character, a reset meant to welcome new and returning players. Parts of the community worried it would split the player base and complicate membership. Ryan tied the cancellation directly to listening: “The last time we didn’t listen to player feedback, combat changed forever. And it has taken us over a decade to recover from that.”
The studio had already begun walking the plan back after RuneFest. RCG covered that earlier pivot in Jagex Apologizes, Re-Evaluates RuneScape Reignited Plan. Thursday’s post makes the outcome final: Reignited is cancelled.
December invitation still stands
Jagex is still opening the gates on December 2. New characters, and any character that has not been in membership since June 2, will get 10 days of free access to RuneScape members worlds through December 12. Old School RuneScape members worlds are not included. The Adventure Guide and the first part of the Remastered Journey still arrive that day, along with other improvements aimed at newcomers.
“No split worlds, just you, me, and the many players coming in, playing the game we all love together,” Ryan wrote. He also said the 2027 roadmap, including an Agility rework and a return to a proper grandmaster quest, remains intact, and that plugins launch on Monday, October 19.
For a live-service MMO that has spent years trying to grow without alienating veterans, killing Reignited this quickly is a clear signal that the existing community still has veto power when a reset feels like a split.
