Josh Hutcherson and Mackenzie Davis will lead DC Studios‘ adult animated Mister Miracle series, with Hutcherson voicing Scott Free and Davis voicing Big Barda. DC Studios co-chief executive officer Peter Safran revealed the casting in an interview with IGN, and TheWrap also reported the casting, noting that DC Studios did not immediately respond to its request for comment.
On Friday, Bleeding Cool reported that fellow DC Studios co-chief executive officer James Gunn confirmed the pairing on Threads after he was asked whether Safran’s reveal was true.
“I think that Tom King really learned a lot in his season of co-creating and executive producing Lanterns and he adapted his book Mister Miracle fully on his own, wrote all eight episodes and I think it’s just dynamite,” Safran told IGN. “Josh Hutcherson as Scott Free and Mackenzie Davis as Big Barda.”
Eight episodes, aiming at 2028
Safran also gave Collider a production update while promoting DC Studios’ Clayface. According to Bleeding Cool’s account of that interview, the first season runs eight episodes of about 30 minutes each, and Safran has already seen animatics for the full season. “We haven’t actually announced a date for it. We’re very advanced on it. I mean, we’ve seen animatics of the whole season. But I think we’ve always thought of it as ’28,” he said.
He left the door open for more. “Well, because it’s about Scott and Barda and their child, I think there are a lot of places you can go with it. There’s no reason why it couldn’t be an ongoing season series,” Safran said. IGN notes that no network or premiere date has been announced.
Tom King’s book, Tom King’s show
Tom King is the showrunner, adapting the 12-issue, Eisner Award-winning 2017 series he created with artist Mitch Gerads. DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation first ordered the series in June 2025, as The Hollywood Reporter reported at the time. The story follows Scott Free, the escape artist known as Mister Miracle, and his warrior wife Big Barda as war rages between Apokolips and New Genesis and Darkseid appears to have captured the Anti-Life Equation.
TheWrap points out that Davis is taller than Hutcherson, a fit for characters whose comics versions have Barda standing around a foot over Scott. It also notes it is unclear whether the pair would carry the roles into live action, though Gunn has said the DCU intends for performers to cross between mediums for “primary castings.”
King had been teasing the cast for months. “Wait till you see who’s been cast. Oh my god, it’s amazing. It’s great,” he told Brandon Davis at WonderCon in May, according to Bleeding Cool.
DC’s animated slate is busy on the comics side too, with the Absolute Batman animated series now in 2D development.
