In a new interview covered by IGN, Obsidian confirmed that The Outer Worlds 2 “underperformed,” and that there are no plans to continue the series with a third entry. The studio said last year’s sequel didn’t hit internal or publisher expectations, and while another recent RPG from them — Avowed — also missed targets, that one is still being positioned as a world they want to keep building on. For The Outer Worlds specifically, this basically freezes the franchise at two games, with no active development on a continuation.

Why it matters:

  • For PC, Xbox, and PlayStation players, it closes the door on a potential trilogy in a universe that a lot of fans saw as a spiritual cousin to Fallout and Mass Effect.
  • It shows how even well‑reviewed AA/AAA RPGs can struggle commercially in a crowded market if they don’t find a broad audience or a strong Game Pass tail.
  • It likely means Obsidian will funnel people and budget toward worlds with clearer growth potential, like Eora (Pillars/Avowed).
