The Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense is heading to Hawaii. Dark Horse Comics has announced BPRD: Declassified, a new five-issue miniseries from Hellboy creator Mike Mignola, co-writer Chris Roberson and artist Mike Norton. The first issue arrives in comic shops on February 17, 2027.
The series stars psychic agent Susan Xiang, last seen in 2025’s The Shadow of the Golden Crane, and astral-projecting agent Victor Koestler. Henry Rouch was working overseas on a classified government project when he mysteriously vanished. Because the circumstances look supernatural, the B.P.R.D. is called in, and the trail leads Xiang and Koestler to Honolulu, where they quickly learn the case runs much deeper than it first appears.
An occult cold war
Roberson says the book pulls back the curtain on a story that has been simmering in the background of the Hellboy Universe for a while.
“We’ve been teasing around the edges of a larger story involving an occult cold war in the pages of Hellboy and the B.P.R.D. and elsewhere for a while now, usually in the background of another supernatural investigation or monster hunt of some kind,” he said. “B.P.R.D.: Declassified is a chance to pull the curtain back a bit and focus our full attention on what’s been going on in the shadows, and to see that the agents of the B.P.R.D. aren’t the only players on the board. The stakes are higher than Susan Xiang and company ever suspected.”
Norton sounds just as excited. “The best thing about working on a B.P.R.D. story (and Chris’s stories in particular) is that I know there’s going to be something I never even THOUGHT of drawing before,” he said. “And let me tell you, this one does NOT disappoint!”
The team
Mignola and Roberson write, Norton draws the interiors and longtime Hellboy colorist Dave Stewart handles colors. As Comics Beat reports, Norton draws the main cover for #1, with a variant by Gabriel Hardman. Later issues get variants from Christopher Mitten, Craig Rousseau, Michael Avon Oeming and more. The book marks another reunion for Mignola, Roberson and Norton, who have worked together on Hellboy and the B.P.R.D. before.
Dark Horse has a busy early 2027 lined up, following its January slate led by Space Usagi: Warrior. BPRD: Declassified gives longtime Hellboy readers another reason to watch the February calendar.
