Bungie Will Restore Vaulted Destiny 2 Campaigns, Destinations & Raids; Evolve Marathon Into Deeper Survival

Bungie is beginning work to bring vaulted Destiny 2 campaigns, destinations, and raids back into the live game — available to all Destiny 2 players — while committing to evolve Marathon beyond its original extraction framing into a deeper survival experience with cooperative PvE, competitive PvP, and PvPvE. The message comes from studio head Poria Torkan and Marathon head of product / GM Josh Deane in a Sep 2026 studio update (Bungie; English day-of coverage Sep 21 via Gematsu / The Verge).

Destiny: unvault work begun — not a flip-switch

Torkan and Deane frame Destiny as foundational to Bungie’s future and state the studio is “not done with Destiny.” Player backlash after Monuments of Triumph was positioned as Destiny 2’s final content update is acknowledged only as the context that pushed the studio to respond — soft note, not the lead.

The hard commitment: restore vaulted campaigns, destinations, and raids for every Destiny 2 player. Caveat (Bungie’s words): this is not restoring old files as-is. Changes since Beyond Light mean lighting, encounters, combatants, and other underlying systems must be updated so returned content meets current stability and gameplay standards. That work will take time; more unvaulting details are promised in the months ahead. No Destiny 3 announce — do not invent one.

Marathon: deeper survival, not Destiny’s replacement

Marathon “was never intended to replace Destiny.” Bungie admits the game did not reach as many players as hoped and “needs to evolve.” Plan: anchor on what makes Marathon special, then expand beyond the genre constraints the studio placed on it into a deeper survival experience — meaningful paths for cooperative PvE, competitive PvP, and PvPvE.

Still planned through year one: October Nightfall Refresh and December Symbiosis, with more Marathon vision detail “later this week” per the studio post.

As-of: 2026-09-21 evening ~5:25 PM CT (America/Chicago). Figures from Bungie primary + Gematsu/Verge Sep 21 English wave. Unvault = campaigns/destinations/raids for all players; systems work required; schedule TBA months ahead. Marathon Oct Nightfall + Dec Symbiosis still planned; deeper survival / PvE+PvP+PvPvE. No Destiny 3.
