Paramount Pictures is developing a live-action film set in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe, Deadline reported in an exclusive on Thursday, Oct. 8. Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, best known for the Transformers films, is attached to produce alongside CD Projekt Red, the Polish studio behind the game and the franchise rights holder. Variety later confirmed the project.
CD Projekt joint CEO Michał Nowakowski responded on X a little over an hour after the Deadline report went up: “We’re excited about Paramount as a future partner who shares our creative ambitions for the Cyberpunk franchise. We look forward to sharing more details at the appropriate time.”
That is all anyone has said so far. No director, writer, cast, plot or release window has been announced, and nobody has said whether the film will follow characters from the game or tell a new story in Night City.
A long road to live action
This is not CD Projekt’s first live-action Cyberpunk effort. In October 2023, the studio announced a partnership with Anonymous Content, the company behind True Detective and Mr. Robot, to develop a live-action project in the same world. In November 2024, Nowakowski said that project was still in the conceptual stage and had not yet been shopped to studios or streamers. Neither the new reports nor CD Projekt’s statement say whether the Paramount film grows out of that partnership or is a separate effort.
The game itself has come a long way since its rough December 2020 launch. CD Projekt said in its first-half 2026 results that Cyberpunk 2077 has sold more than 40 million copies and that the Phantom Liberty expansion has passed 15 million. The anime spinoff is also returning: Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 premieres on Netflix on Oct. 20.
Paramount’s game slate
Cyberpunk joins a growing list of video game adaptations at Paramount. Deadline notes the studio is co-producing the Street Fighter movie with Legendary, which opens Oct. 16, and has a Call of Duty film with Peter Berg directing and co-writing the script with Taylor Sheridan.
The Verge points out that the news lands shortly after Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery completed their merger under the Skydance name. That deal also put WB Games and DC under the same parent company, as RCG reported Tuesday.
