DC Next Level at NYCC: New Starfire, Swamp Thing: Hallowed Ground and a Superboy-Prime Special

ComicsDC Next Level at NYCC: New Starfire, Swamp Thing: Hallowed Ground and a Superboy-Prime Special

DC used its Next Level panel at New York Comic Con on Saturday to announce three new books: Swamp Thing: Hallowed Ground, a new Starfire series and a Superboy-Prime Special. DC’s editor-in-chief, Marie Javins, moderated, and the panel also brought updates on Batman, Vixen, Static and the Legion of Super-Heroes. DC had not posted its own announcement of the new titles when RCG checked Saturday afternoon, so the details below come from trade reporters who were in the room, and on two points those reporters don’t agree.

Starfire goes home

Writer Alyssa Wong and artist Belén Ortega are the team on Starfire, and Wong pitched the book as “Red Sonja meets One Piece.” According to ComicsBeat, Wong teased that Starfire’s sister, Blackfire, is in the mix. Comic Book Club quotes Wong saying the story is set on Tamaran, which is under siege, as Starfire returns home after a long time away.

The timing depends on who you read. ComicsBeat reports that the series is coming in April 2027, and Bleeding Cool and Comic Book Club also report April 2027. AIPT‘s recap says only that the book is scheduled for early 2027. AIPT also notes that no artwork was shown for Starfire during the panel.

Swamp Thing: Hallowed Ground

Swamp Thing: Hallowed Ground comes from writer Steve Foxe and artist Riccardo Federici. ComicsBeat reports that Joshua Williamson presented it as one for longtime Swamp Thing fans and that it arrives in 2027. AIPT says no further story details were revealed.

Superboy-Prime Special: who’s making it?

DC closed its new-title announcements with a Superboy-Prime Special. Here the reports split on the creative team. ComicsBeat credits Superboy-Prime Special #1 to writer Joshua Williamson and artist Dan Mora, and Bleeding Cool reports the same pairing and a 2027 release. AIPT, by contrast, writes that three pieces of artwork were shown but that no creative team or release date was given. AIPT describes the story as Superboy-Prime going home.

Batman, Vixen, Static and the Legion

AIPT reports a first look at Batman: Justice Year from Williamson and Bruno Redondo, in which Batman sets out to spy on the Justice League. RCG covered the book’s reveal last week. Deniz Camp and Javier Rodríguez shared new interior pages from Shadow of the Bat, which ComicsBeat notes was first announced at San Diego Comic-Con, along with a Chris Samnee variant cover.

On the main Batman series, Matt Fraction showed interior art from Batman #15 and teased Bruce Wayne being “assassinated,” with Batman investigating the case as Matches Malone, AIPT reports. DC also said more titles will spin out of the Bad Seeds event, though none were named.

Stephanie Williams and Khary Randolph’s Vixen opens with a new villain and adds a love interest from the Bat-Family, with covers from W. Scott Forbes, David Nakayama and Jock. AIPT adds that Detroit plays a major role. Cody Ziglar said his Static series will fix how rarely Virgil Hawkins has appeared lately. AIPT also reports that Timber Wolf and Kid Quantum join the cast of the new Legion of Super-Heroes, drawn by Hayden Sherman.
