Paul Atreides’ darkest chapter is coming to comics. Abrams ComicArts will publish Dune Messiah: Book 1, a graphic novel adaptation of Frank Herbert’s 1969 sequel to Dune, on Nov. 3, 2026, according to the publisher. The hardcover is priced at $25.99.

Brian Herbert, Frank Herbert’s son, and Kevin J. Anderson adapted the book, with art by Michael Shelfer and lettering by Hai Nguyen Le Manh. Bill Sienkiewicz paints the cover, as he did for the earlier Dune graphic novels. This is the first of a two-part adaptation.

The same creative team worked together on the Dune: House Harkonnen comics, and Herbert and Anderson also adapted the original Dune into a three-volume graphic novel series for Abrams ComicArts.

Dune Messiah picks up years after the first book. Paul is now Emperor of the known universe, revered by the Fremen as a messiah and feared by rival houses, and absolute power has made him a target. As a conspiracy grows against him and his prophetic visions begin to shift, the future of his empire and the people he loves hangs in the balance.

As CBR noted, Anderson has described how the novel caught many readers off guard when it was first released, because it showed the once-admired hero falling “to corruption and treachery” after his rise to power.

The timing is deliberate. Dune: Part Three, director Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Dune Messiah, opens in theaters in December, with Timothée Chalamet returning as Paul alongside Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin and Javier Bardem. Robert Pattinson joins the cast, and Anya Taylor-Joy appears as Paul’s sister, Alia. Readers who want the book’s version of events in comic form can get the first half a few weeks before the film arrives.

Abrams ComicArts has been expanding its reach this fall, including a new deal that brings its graphic novels to Neon Ichiban’s digital platform.
