Gears of War: E-Day Passes 22,000 Concurrent Players on Steam at Full Launch, Topping Its Early-Access and Beta Peaks

PC | MacGears of War: E-Day Passes 22,000 Concurrent Players on Steam at Full Launch, Topping Its Early-Access and Beta Peaks

Gears of War: E-Day passed 22,000 concurrent players on Steam on its full launch day. When RCG checked Valve’s public Steam player-count API at 5:13 PM CT Tuesday, it showed 22,642 people playing at once, up from 22,467 about a minute earlier. That is a live snapshot of who was in the game at that moment, not a confirmed all-time peak, and it covers Steam only. Xbox says the game launched worldwide Tuesday on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Game Pass, and Steam, and the Xbox side doesn’t publish live player counts.

Even with those limits, the reading tops both numbers E-Day had already posted on Steam. During early access, the game peaked at 20,374 concurrent players on October 2, according to SteamDB data reported by KeenGamer and PureXbox, and RCG covered that early-access mark at the time. KeenGamer also points out that the August multiplayer beta hit a higher Steam peak of 22,084, which left 20,374 as the record for the finished game but not for anything carrying the E-Day name. Tuesday’s live count is above both.

The gap over earlier Gears games on PC is much wider. KeenGamer puts Gears 5‘s all-time Steam high at 10,196 players, Gears Tactics at 7,351, and Gears of War: Reloaded under 5,000. E-Day’s launch-day count is more than double Gears 5’s best on the platform.

The trackers hadn’t caught up when RCG looked. PureGameStats listed an all-time peak of 21,938 on October 6, below Valve’s own afternoon reading, so its last snapshot appears to come from earlier in the day. The day’s real peak won’t be clear until trackers log the full day, and US evening hours were still ahead when RCG checked. PureGameStats also lists the game’s Steam user reviews at 77% positive across 4,133 reviews.

Why the Steam number matters

E-Day is a day-one Game Pass release with Xbox Play Anywhere support, so many players never touch Steam at all. That makes Steam an incomplete scoreboard, but it is still the only public, minute-by-minute gauge for a Microsoft launch. On that gauge, E-Day’s launch-day count already sits above every Steam peak a Gears game has recorded, including its own beta.

The launch-day crowd follows a strong critical start: RCG reported Monday that E-Day hit 87 on Metacritic and 88 on OpenCritic.
