Nintendo closed its September 9, 2026 Direct with a pink-puffball left turn: Kirby and the World Beyond, a new Nintendo Switch 2 adventure aimed at Spring 2027.
Game Informer, Video Games Chronicle, and GamesRadar+ all frame the same headline beat from that Direct: this is a free-roaming / free-exploration Kirby game — not another stage-ladder sequel dressed up as one. Nintendo’s own store-facing language (quoted by Gematsu and Rectify Gaming) is careful and specific: players can “freely explore an expansive world and put Copy Abilities to creative use. Marketing has not stamped the words “open world” on the box; outlets are inferring openness from the trailer and that “freely explore” line. Prefer Nintendos wording until the studio maps the structure.
What the trailer and store copy actually show
Coverage of the reveal trailer (Game Informer, VGC) describes Kirby doing classic Kirby things — inhaling enemies, grabbing powers, tearing around fields — before a crack in the sky breaks the illusion of a sealed world. Game Informer calls the vibe a Truman Showstyle shell; a strange floating companion joins the quest to learn what sits beyond it.
Nintendo Store overview text (via Gematsu / Rectify) goes further on the premise and tools:
- Traversal Copy Abilities: bomb jumps to blast into the air, sticking a sword into trees to climb, and high-speed riding across fields
- Story hook: rescue a mysterious girl with strange powers from King Dedede; question her connection to a new power Kirby has gained; confront a huge wall and whatever waits on the other side
Treat trailer-only links (for example, whether the floating companion is that girl) as unresolved unless Nintendo’s listings say so outright.
Why Spring 2027 matters
VGC and Game Informer both tie the window to Kirby’s 35th anniversary celebrations next year. Structurally, outlets also stress the lineage: this is the second full 3D Kirby adventure after Kirby and the Forgotten Land (Switch, 2022), which VGC notes later got a Switch 2 Edition + Star-Crossed World upgrade in August 2025. Gematsu lists HAL Laboratory as developer and Nintendo as publisher.
As of evening September 15, 2026 (2026-09-15 ~5:18 PM CDT (America/Chicago)), no day-within-spring ship date has been published in the cited coverage — only the Spring 2027 window on Switch 2. Refresh against Nintendo’s store listing before any calendar hard-date.
