Marvel Comics is giving fans the first deep look at Maximum X-Men, the new ongoing from writer Christopher Yost and artist Tony S. Daniel that puts mutants in the Avengers’ shoes after Avengers: Armageddon. A GamesRadar+ exclusive dated September 17, 2026 pairs interior-page previews with a Yost interview; AIPT and Marvel’s earlier SDCC framing line up on the roster, opening threat, and December 2, 2026 street for #1.
Mutants by birth, heroes by choice
Official copy (via GamesRadar / Marvel): in the wake of Avengers: Armageddon, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes are no more — so Storm gathers an elite team to stand in defense of the Earth: Wolverine, Colossus, Bishop, Iceman, Psylocke, Firestar, and Justice. Tagline: “Mutants by birth, heroes by choice.”
Their first challenge is a full-on invasion from the Negative Zone — framed as an Annihilation-scale wave. Official solicitation asks whether it’s Annihilus again “or something far, far worse.” AIPT’s Sep 17 writeup likewise leads with the Annihilation Wave as the opening cosmic-scale threat.
Yost on Claremont vibes and purpose
Talking to GamesRadar, Yost describes the run as having a “classic Claremont vibe” — big adventure, intrigue, relationship drama, and fun — while “leaning a little more into the action.” On the team’s purpose, he returns to the classic line: “To protect a world that hates and fears them.” He adds that in this moment humanity seems to be coming around a little, and asks who will save the world without Avengers. He also praises Daniel’s dynamic, action-heavy art and teases a likely Spider-Man cameo “probably in issue 6.”
On sale Dec 2 — covers named
