Nintendo used its September 9, 2026 Nintendo Direct to put a new 2D Metroid on the board — and it is not a far-off tease.

Metroid Ravenous is a new 2D entry in the series for Nintendo Switch 2, launching January 28, 2027, according to Game Informer (Charles Harte) and Nintendo Life (Ollie Reynolds), both covering the Direct the same day.

What the trailer shows

Game Informer’s write-up frames Ravenous as seemingly set after Metroid Dread. In the reveal trailer, Samus describes being attacked by unknown assailants, sustaining grave injuries, and fighting to escape an alien moon — with a blunt survival line Game Informer quotes: she will make it home “even if I have to feed on my enemies to do so. It’s eat or be eaten.”

Trailer/gameplay beats called out across the two outlets include:

  • a new energy-siphon / life-force absorption ability (the “ravenous” hook)
  • a dash that warps through walls
  • running on water
  • the return of Metroid Dread’s parry mechanic (per Game Informer)
  • finishing attacks / heavier melee emphasis (Nintendo Life’s read of the footage)
  • a confrontation with cloaked, wide-brimmed mysterious figures before a desert-sand fall sequence (Game Informer)

Editions and extras (per Nintendo Life)

Nintendo Life reports that a Metroid Ravenous amiibo collection arrives with individual Samus and Chozo Statue figures at launch, and that a third amiibo — Samus (Metroid Suit) — is bundled with a Special Edition that includes the game and a steel game case. Both standard and special editions are tied to the Jan. 28, 2027 launch in that coverage, with pre-orders said to begin the day of the Direct.

Nintendo Life also cites the eShop listing for digital pricing at £49.99 / $59.99, with another $10 for the standard physical — and notes Special Edition pricing was not confirmed at write time. Treat SKUs/pricing as Nintendo Life’s eShop/reporting snapshot, not a pasted Nintendo corporate PDF.

Why it matters

After years when 2D Metroid felt scarce, Ravenous is another mainline-style side-scroller on a short fuse: from Direct stage to street date is roughly four and a half months. Platform listing in Game Informer’s product box is Switch 2 only; neither Game Informer nor Nintendo Life’s pieces claim a Switch (OLED / original) version.
