Infinity Ward has laid out how DMZ works in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. In a detailed PlayStation Blog post on October 5, the studio called DMZ “Call of Duty’s definitive extraction shooter experience” and confirmed it launches alongside the Campaign and Multiplayer when the game releases on October 23.
The heart of the mode is the Forward Operating Base, your command center between runs. It starts small and grows as you complete Operations across the map of Hajin, eventually expanding to more than a dozen stations. From the start you can manage Operators, review DMZ Orders, store loot in your Stash, build Loadouts, test weapons at a Firing Range, and deploy.
Successful runs unlock more of the base. A 3D Printer turns resources into gear and upgrades other stations. The Gunsmith lets you buy attachments with DMZ Cash or build new weapons if you extract with a Weapon Manual. A Vendor sells rotating stock that changes daily. There is also a Bounty Leaderboard tracking the most dangerous PvP players, a Boss Board for tracking down Lieutenants, and a Dog Tag Case to show off trophies from defeated Operators. A dedicated DMZ progression track runs from level 1 to 70.
Each deployment comes in one of three flavors. Story Missions are replayable narrative objectives with big rewards. Dynamic Operations drop you straight into a job for DMZ Cash and XP, with a Supply Drop of increasing rarity for each completed Op. Free Roam lets you explore Hajin City with no mission at all.
Infinity Ward’s tips point toward boss hunts against roaming Lieutenants and Commanders, steady looting to feed the 3D Printer, and chasing an S Tier rating in the After Action Report. Land, water, and air vehicles are available, with repairs and fuel at gas stations. Every area of Hajin also has a Threat Level, so loud play brings a heavier enemy response, which makes stealth worth considering.
