Pokémon Champions director Masaaki Hoshino told Video Games Chronicle he wants traditional turn-based battling preserved inside Champions — and that Stadium-style single-player modes are off the table for now. The VGC feature, by Jordan Middler and dated September 7, 2026, frames Champions as the exclusive home of the Pokémon Video Game Championships after the 2026 World Championships used the game, with next year’s Worlds set to stay on Champions even after Pokémon Winds and Waves arrive.
On turn-based combat, Hoshino said: “I would love to keep turn-based battles around like forever… as long as Pokémon Champions is around, turn-based battles will be kind of preserved and will continue forever.” That “forever” pledge is tied to Champions remaining available, not to every Pokémon battle format across the franchise.
Fans have asked for offline modes in the vein of Pokémon Stadium. Hoshino cited Stadium as a big inspiration for Champions but, in quotes VGC presents as exclusive to that interview (not a first-party reprint), said: “For the time being, we probably won’t be adding additional modes similar to Pokémon Stadium.” His reason: adding a lot of single-player modes “moves people away from the PvP” and increases match time, so he wants to “focus on PvP for the time being” while player counts are still climbing. That is a “for the time being” stance — not a permanent ban on Stadium-like modes, and it should not be read as applying the “forever” language to single-player.
Champions launched earlier on console and later on mobile this year, per VGC; this piece does not pin an exact release date beyond that sequencing. Hoshino also discussed onboarding: he does not want to lengthen the tutorial because longer tutorials raise dropout risk, while in-game assist “probably could be better” for new battlers. Roster picks have partly favored ease of use for mobile newcomers, with more advanced Pokémon possibly arriving later.
On battle gimmicks, he said: “For the time being, we’ll probably stick to Mega Evolution, but definitely want to add more in the future.” Whether later gimmicks would replace Megas or run in parallel is still undecided and under consideration.
