Sony and Constantin Film’s Resident Evil is back on top of the worldwide box office in its fourth weekend. Deadline reports that the film’s China release powered an estimated $62.7 million global weekend, lifting its worldwide total to an estimated $320.2 million. That makes it director Zach Cregger‘s highest-grossing movie ever, according to Deadline, passing the $270 million worldwide that his previous film, Weapons, earned last year.
All of these figures are Sunday studio estimates, so they can still move when final weekend numbers are reported.
China and Japan open
China did the heavy lifting. Deadline puts the opening there at $40.6 million, which it calls the best opening for a horror film in China in the last two years. The release landed during China’s National Day Golden Week holiday, and Deadline notes that the series has long been a favorite in the territory, where Resident Evil: The Final Chapter opened to a reported $94.3 million in 2017.
The film also opened in Japan, the home country of Capcom’s games, with $3.6 million. Deadline lists the other top international markets so far as the UK at $17.0 million, Mexico at $11.8 million, Australia and France at $8.5 million each, Germany at $7.3 million and Spain at $7.1 million. The international total now stands at $181.7 million from 67 markets.
Imax screens contributed $8.8 million this weekend, $7.7 million of it from China, bringing the film’s Imax total to $32.8 million, per Deadline.
Domestic hold
In the U.S. and Canada, The Numbers has Resident Evil in third place with an estimated $8.35 million from 3,085 theaters, down 34% from last weekend, for a domestic total of $138.5 million after 24 days. Deadline’s domestic chart matches the $8.35 million weekend and $138.5 million total but lists the drop as 35%. Universal’s horror newcomer Other Mommy led the domestic weekend with $27.5 million.
Deadline’s $320.2 million worldwide figure lines up with The Numbers’ domestic total plus Deadline’s international tally. RCG covered the film’s earlier domestic run, most recently its third-weekend Saturday estimates and, before that, its second weekend behind Avengers: Endgame Encore.
Cregger’s film is a new story set in the world of Capcom’s survival horror series, starring Zach Cherry, Kali Reis and Paul Walter Hauser, according to Deadline.
