Something Is Killing the Children hits a major milestone this week. Issue #50 of the BOOM! Studios horror series from James Tynion IV and Werther Dell’Edera arrives in comic shops on Wednesday, October 7, and it brings Erica Slaughter back to the present-day story.
The 48-page issue picks up after the Tribulation saga. According to BOOM!’s description, shared by Bloody Disgusting, Erica is “completely distraught from her encounter with Cutter and the death of Gabi” and on the run from the Order of St. George. In her escape, she heads for a place that shaped her, the Valmont Mountain Lodge. Dell’Edera draws the issue, with colors by Miguel Muerto and letters by AndWorld Design.
The anniversary also comes with a new way to play in the Slaughterverse. Tynion’s production house, Tiny Onion, has revealed Something Is Killing the Children: A Gridstorm Game, the first game set in the series’ world, according to an announcement covered by Graphic Policy. It is a grid-based, one-on-one tabletop card battler where character effects and positioning decide the match. One player leads Erica and the hunters, using stealth and clever movement to save the children, while the other plays the monsters, using predatory instincts to catch them from a distance. Each deck includes a roster of characters and creatures from the comic.
The game is designed by Wayves Creative Co., with art by Dell’Edera and card design by Tiny Onion, and it is planned as a Kickstarter campaign in 2027. Tiny Onion and Wayves also plan more games based on other Tiny Onion titles using the same Gridstorm engine and mechanics.
Fans don’t have to wait until 2027 for a first look. An Erica Slaughter trading card from the game comes exclusively in the Something Is Killing the Children #50 Cover C Blind Bag Variant, in stores now and also available at Tiny Onion’s booth, #HB907, at New York Comic Con this week.
Tiny Onion says the comics have sold more than 5 million copies worldwide, and the series has already spun off a novel, crossovers, and film and animation plans at Blumhouse. The next crossover is close: read RCG’s details on the Swamp Thing Is Killing the Children one-shot due December 2.
