Sony Reportedly Surveying Devs on Ending PS Discs

PlayStation

Sony Interactive Entertainment is reportedly surveying developers about ending PlayStation disc support, according to GamesIndustry.biz (Sep. 28, 2026), citing the YouTube channel Moore’s Law is Dead and contacts also relayed by Eurogamer.

MLID host Tom described an unusually large developer survey with a question framed indirectly around physical sales — “asking developers for feedback on killing discs,” in the phrasing GI quotes. Sony has not publicly confirmed the survey’s existence, contents, or any change to policy.

Confirmed backdrop: Earlier in 2026, SIE said it would end physical disc production for new PlayStation games starting in January 2028, calling digital the “natural direction” as player preference shifted. GI notes a Game File figure that about four-fifths of PS4/PS5 purchases in the last financial year were digital. Specialty publishers including Iam8bit, Lost in Cult, and PM Studios previously criticized the cutoff on the record.

Why it matters: a quiet survey — if accurately reported — would be the first signal that Sony is polling creator sentiment after collector and indie backlash, not proof the 2028 production-end date is canceled. For how PlayStation’s storefront is leaning into digital loyalty experiments, see our report on the PS Store Wallet Credits soft launch.

Collectors and specialty publishers have spent months arguing that January 2028 production-end framing still leaves open questions about third-party pressing, limited editions, and archival access. A developer survey — again, only reported through Moore’s Law is Dead’s contacts — would be Sony asking creators how physical sales still matter to them, not a press conference reversing the plan.

US readers should keep two clocks separate: the announced disc-production end in January 2028, and this unconfirmed survey chatter from late September 2026. Until Sony Interactive Entertainment confirms the questionnaire or changes the policy in a first-party post, RCG is filing the survey as reported industry talk layered on top of the already-public digital-preference statement.

What we are not saying: This is a reported survey via a YouTuber’s contacts. We are not claiming Sony confirmed it, reverse-walked January 2028, or banned all physical forever overnight. Stick to “reportedly surveying” and the already-announced production-end framing until SIE speaks.
