Steam has already added more games in 2026 than it did in all of 2025, and there are still two and a half months left in the year. By Oct. 16, Steam had logged 21,388 new releases for 2026, according to SteamDB figures cited by Kotaku. That tops 2025’s full-year total of 21,248.

Kotaku credits Brendan Keogh with spotting the milestone. On Bluesky Friday morning, he wrote: “Happy ‘More games have now been released on Steam in 2026 so far than in all of 2025’ day for those who celebrate.”

A record run that keeps growing

Steam’s yearly release count has climbed for several years in a row. SteamDB’s yearly breakdown lists 14,019 games released in 2023 and 18,439 in 2024. That means 2025’s total was about 2,800 games higher than 2024’s, which in turn beat 2023 by more than 4,400.

The last stretch of the year is traditionally the busiest for game releases, Kotaku notes, so the 2026 total has plenty of room to grow. Kotaku cites a projection from SteamPageAnalyzer, a third-party tracker, that 2026 will finish with at least 24,000 releases. That number is the tracker’s estimate. Valve hasn’t published one of its own.

Kotaku points to vibe-coded games

Kotaku writer John Walker ties part of the surge, and what he expects next, to AI-assisted and “vibe-coded” games. He argues that newer AI tools have made it faster to churn out knockoffs of existing games. He also argues that Steam’s $100 submission fee isn’t doing much to slow low-effort releases, and that players can’t currently filter games with AI disclosures out of Steam’s new-release lists. Walker writes that he finds it hard to believe Steam will see fewer than 30,000 releases in 2027.

Kotaku does give Valve some credit on discovery. It says the store’s front-page Your Personal Calendar section, a 10-slot row of games Steam’s algorithm thinks you’ll want to play, is “pretty good” at its job. It also says some developers have anecdotally reported that the section helps their games reach likely buyers.

The release milestone landed the same day RCG covered Valve’s new Steam Achievement Sets beta, which lets developers group a game’s achievements so new content doesn’t break a player’s 100 percent completion.
