Xbox has shut down the biggest takeaway from a Tuesday report about Grand Theft Auto VI. Late on Tuesday, October 6, Xbox chief strategy officer Matthew Ball wrote on X: “While the excitement for GTAVI and XBOX is great to see, it has also led to some misreporting. We are looking forward to launching GTAVI on XBOX November 19, though the game will not be streaming exclusively or to PC.”
The report came from The Verge, which said Xbox CEO Asha Sharma told employees at an all-hands meeting that Microsoft was getting ready to do something around GTA VI that “no other platform holder is doing.” According to The Verge’s sources, that teaser was about Xbox landing streaming rights for the game, and the original story described the deal as exclusive.
That detail is what set off a wave of excitement. Rockstar still hasn’t announced a PC version of GTA VI, and Xbox Cloud Gaming normally runs in web browsers and on PCs as well as on consoles. An exclusive cloud deal would have given PC players a way to play at launch without buying a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S.
Ball’s post rules that out. The Verge has since added a correction saying Xbox clarified the deal isn’t exclusive and that GTA VI won’t be streamed to PCs. What Ball didn’t address is whether the game will be playable through Xbox Cloud Gaming on consoles at all. As Eurogamer points out, his wording doesn’t deny a console-only streaming arrangement, and Rockstar has not announced a streaming deal with any provider.
The timing is notable because Xbox Cloud Gaming is changing in November, the same month GTA VI arrives. Microsoft is capping monthly streaming at 15 hours for Game Pass Ultimate, 10 hours for Premium, and five hours for Essential, and The Verge reports a pay-as-you-go option is coming next month for players who buy blocks of streaming hours instead of subscribing. RCG covered the caps when Xbox announced them: Xbox caps Game Pass cloud hours in November.
For now, the plan is unchanged for most players. GTA VI launches on November 19 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. PC players will have to keep waiting for Rockstar and Take-Two to announce a version of their own.
