Jonathan Hickman is back talking X-Men. In AIPT’s X-Men Monday #354, his first appearance in the column since 2021, the writer laid out the plan for Midnight X-Men, the lead mutant title in Marvel’s new Midnight line. Issue #1 arrives Wednesday, October 7, 2026.
The only X-book: Hickman said directly that “this will be the only X-book in the Midnight Universe.” Unlike the Krakoa era, when his House of X and Powers of X spun out a whole line, Midnight’s mutant story runs through one title.
Vampires change the metaphor: The book adds vampires to the world. Hickman said he wanted to move past the simple humans-versus-mutants split and “lay a secondary, more complex system over the top of” it, so the X-Men are no longer the only feared minority in the story. He also said he has roughly the first six arcs sketched out, around 36 issues, while staying spoiler-averse about the full cast and teasing an eye-catching new look for Iceman.
The team: The interview also highlights RB Silva’s character designs, interior work from Matteo Della Fonte, Matteo Buffagni, and Arthur Hesli, and Cloaked Covers by Jay Bowen.
Orders: In the column’s introduction, AIPT’s Chris Hassan writes that the book already has orders topping 1 million, with second printings on the way. That is the column’s framing, not a Hickman quote or an audited Marvel number. For Marvel’s earlier announcement about Midnight launch orders and reprints, see our report: Marvel Midnight Universe tops 1 million orders; second printings Oct 28.
Why it matters: Hickman’s Krakoa run reshaped the X-Men for most of this decade, and fans have wondered what he would do next with the franchise. A single focused title with a long plan and a new supernatural layer suggests Midnight X-Men is built to be the line’s anchor rather than one book among many.
What we are not saying: we are not revealing a roster Hickman declined to confirm, and we are not treating the 1 million figure as a Marvel-audited total for this issue alone.
