Sony Will Skip CES 2027 Entirely, Ending a Presence Dating to 1967, as It Focuses on Entertainment

Sony won’t be at CES in January. A Sony spokesperson confirmed to Bloomberg that neither the company nor any of its affiliates plans to exhibit at the Las Vegas show in 2027. That ends a run at the world’s best-known consumer electronics showcase going back to the first CES in 1967, when Bloomberg says Sony products were on display.

Japan’s Nikkei reported the news first. Bloomberg’s story, republished by The Japan Times, says the spokesperson confirmed Nikkei’s report. Engadget also cites the statement Sony gave Bloomberg.

What Sony said

In the statement Bloomberg reported, Sony said: “We continuously and strategically evaluate our approach to events and communications based on the needs and priorities of our diverse business.” The company added that its focus continues to shift toward entertainment, intellectual property and technology that supports creators. Engadget’s account of the statement lists what that entertainment covers: games, anime, films and music.

Nikkei describes the decision in similar terms. It reports that the core of Sony Group’s business has moved to entertainment such as games and music, so exhibiting at CES matters less than it used to. Bloomberg makes the same point, writing that Sony’s growing focus on games, music and film has made CES less important as a place to show off its strategy.

A gradual exit, now complete

The change started showing at this year’s show. Nikkei reports that Sony exhibited at CES every year from 1967 through 2025. At CES 2026, Sony Group had no exhibit of its own. Its only presence was Sony Honda Mobility, the joint venture with Honda, which showed the Afeela electric vehicle.

That project didn’t last. Bloomberg reports that the EV effort, one of Sony’s highest-profile attempts at a new platform for content and AI-powered services, fell apart this year. Sony and Honda said they would reassess the future of the joint venture they set up in 2022. Engadget says the EV project was scrapped a couple of months after CES, and Bloomberg’s headline notes that the CES decision comes after the Honda venture was dropped.

Sony has also pulled back from other consumer hardware. Engadget points out that the company handed the Bravia TV brand over to TCL. Bloomberg adds that Sony is still a key supplier of image sensors for cars, and that its executives have argued vehicles could eventually become a venue for new kinds of entertainment.

Where PlayStation fits

Bloomberg calls Sony “the PlayStation creator,” and games are the first item in Engadget’s list of the entertainment Sony says it’s prioritizing. Sony isn’t leaving hardware entirely, either. Engadget notes that Sony still makes gaming devices and that the PlayStation division has been expanding into peripherals such as monitors, headphones and speakers.

The CES show floor will look different without Sony. Bloomberg notes that Sony has long had one of the biggest booths at the show and drew big crowds to its keynotes, even as other Japanese companies scaled back. Engadget adds that Sony’s press conferences had been a CES staple for decades. There won’t be one in 2027.
