Todd McFarlane’s antihero is getting another Christmas nightmare. Image Comics has announced I Saw Spawn: A Twisted Christmas Tale, a two-part holiday horror series that starts on November 4, with the conclusion arriving on December 9.
It’s a sequel to last year’s I Saw Santa: A Spawn Universe Christmas Story, and writers Chris Killian and Andrew Sanders are back, with art by Todor Hristov. According to Image’s listing, the North Pole is shaken by a gruesome massacre that bears the signature of serial killer Charlie Kohl. As Santa investigates, dark forces begin to corrupt his workshop from within, and Spawn may be the only one who can stop it. Issue #1 is 48 pages for $5.99, with covers by Rob “Sketchcraft” Duenas and Daniel Henriques.
Image describes the book as a dark holiday story with “a new mystery, a growing body count, and a much bigger role for Spawn himself.” It also folds McFarlane’s Twisted Christmas toy line into the Spawn universe, and Image has teased a special variant cover by McFarlane, CBR reports.
The bigger role for Spawn came from the notes on the first book. “When we were writing I Saw Santa, we didn’t even think to include Spawn in our original pitch because, the audacity, right? He’s the Holy Grail of Todd’s creations,” Killian said. “So, imagine our surprise when our main note back last year was, ‘This is great, but needs more Spawn.'”
Sanders promised the sequel goes further. “Last year we broke Santa’s spirit, so this season Chris and I are digging into the ugly side of the Yuletide, asking what secrets Santa might be hiding at the North Pole,” he said. “This sequel, no spoilers, is a much bigger, hairier beast. And by beast, I absolutely mean Krampus.”
Last year’s I Saw Santa is available now for anyone who wants to catch up before November.
Image has more big releases on the way this holiday season. RCG also covered the Savage Dragon Compendium hitting shops November 18.
