Marvel Rivals Lets 50 Players Fight Thanos Starting Oct. 24

PC | Mac

Marvel Rivals is recreating one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s biggest moments, and it needs a lot of players to do it. NetEase’s hero shooter will launch its Path to Doomsday – Avengers: Endgame event on Saturday, October 24, with a new PvE mode where 50 players team up against Thanos and his army.

The official trailer, released Tuesday, October 20, shows a battlefield straight out of the film’s final fight, with heroes swarming a giant Thanos as alien forces pour in.

A raid boss called Thanos

Thanos is far larger than the usual heroes, which should give everyone room to land hits, but he hits back hard. The trailer shows him calling down an aerial strike from his ship that wipes out a large group of players at once. As Kotaku puts it, he is essentially a raid boss. Winning appears to end with a scene of Tony Stark wearing the Infinity Gauntlet and snapping Thanos away, just like the movie.

GamingBolt reports that the event also includes interactive activities in Times Square. The mode continues Marvel Rivals’ Path to Doomsday series, which has been building toward the release of Avengers: Doomsday with MCU-themed events. Earlier this year, players took part in a Battle of New York event against Loki, and Season 10.5 introduced more MCU-inspired modes.

Can 50 players work together?

Marvel Rivals is normally a six-versus-six game, so a 50-player cooperative fight is a big change of pace. The question is how much coordination it will actually take. With that many heroes on the field, the mode looks closer to a spectacle than a strategy test, which may be exactly the point for a limited-time event.

Hero shooters have been leaning on big events and new characters to keep players coming back this fall, with rivals like Valorant adding new agents such as Hush, its new duelist from Guangdong, China. Marvel Rivals is free to play on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, so anyone curious can jump in when the Endgame event goes live on October 24.
