The Bulletproof Coffin is coming back from the dead. David Hine and Shaky Kane are reuniting for Bulletproof Coffin: Giant! Cease to Exist, a 72-page one-shot from Oni Press due Jan. 12, 2027, according to the publisher’s announcement shared by Broken Frontier.
The story takes place inside Golden Nugget Comics, the fictional imprint at the heart of the series, where a war is being waged by the Sons of Technarchy, a cabal of hyper-intelligent trillionaires who treat entire realities as disposable playthings. Standing against them are the Golden Nugget heroes, including Eye-We-I, the Scarlet Spook, Ramona – Queen of the Stone Age, the Red Wraith, Coffin Fly and the Shield of Justice. As the fight rages, Hine and Kane themselves get pulled into the chaos.
“There I was enjoying my retirement from the increasingly fraught world of comic books, when my old friend and nemesis Shaky Kane called me up with an offer I couldn’t refuse,” Hine said. “While the boundaries between reality and fiction are breaking down around us, Shaky figured the world needs another shot in the arm from The Bulletproof Coffin. So here it is, a last labour of love and hate from the Dynamic Duo, an antidote to New Fakery and proof that we ain’t dead yet.”
Kane promised “a big-shot, one-shot of genre busting hallucinatory hoo-ha,” drawn in what he calls “Shaky-vision.”
Hine and Kane created the “Ficto-Verse” in The Bulletproof Coffin, a six-issue miniseries about comic collector Steve Neyman, who uncovers a strange connection between real life and obscure vintage pulp comics. It continued in The Bulletproof Coffin: Disinterred in 2012 and the 2017 one-shot The Thousand Yard Stare, in which the two creators first became characters in their own book.
Cease to Exist has a standard cover by Kane and variants by Raúl Allen and Alex Diotto. Penguin Random House lists it at $12.99, and an ebook edition is also planned.
January is shaping up as a busy month for creator-driven revivals, with Dan DiDio and Tom Derenick also bringing back Secret Agent X-9 at Mad Cave. Bulletproof Coffin: Giant! Cease to Exist arrives in comic shops and bookstores on Jan. 12, 2027.
