The Elder Scrolls VI finally has an official name: Sentinel. Bethesda Softworks revealed the title on November 3 in a video celebrating the studio’s 40th anniversary, as Xbox Wire announced.
As we covered when The Verge first reported the Sentinel name and a Hammerfell setting, the title had been tied to the game for weeks. It is now confirmed by Bethesda and Xbox.
The anniversary video is narrated by Todd Howard, who walks back through Bethesda’s history, starting with its first game, the football title Gridiron, before moving to The Elder Scrolls series in the early 1990s. Near the end, Howard turns to the question fans keep asking.
“You know, everybody’s always asking about Elder Scrolls 6,” Howard says, according to PC Gamer. “And we thought, hey, given the moment, what a perfect time to tell you what The Elder Scrolls 6 is actually called.”
After the title card, the teaser shows a quote attributed to Yazar, Moth Priest of High Queen Iradne of Hammerfell, dated the year 4E 206: “The scroll offered only a shimmer, a veil thinly lifted to my eyes. A future lost. A victory undone. Sands of time scattered by fate.” PC Gamer notes that the date, flagged by the fan wiki UESP, places Sentinel at least five years after the events of Skyrim.
Bethesda did not name the setting outright, but the clues point to Hammerfell, homeland of the Redguards. Sentinel is one of Hammerfell’s major kingdoms and the capital of the Alik’r Desert, which fits the sandy backdrop of the teaser.
Is there a release date? No. The reveal covered the name only, with no release date, release window, platforms, or gameplay. The Elder Scrolls VI was first announced in 2018, which makes Sentinel the first official detail in eight years.
