Firefly Studios has delayed the Steam Early Access launch of Stronghold 4 from December 7, 2026 to April 20, 2027, and the extra months mean the PC castle-sim sequel will now ship its economic campaign on day one.
Gematsu reports the new date alongside a full statement from Firefly studio head Nick Tannahill, who admitted the timing stings. “And yes, I am aware of the irony of putting this out just after we announced our old release date,” Tannahill wrote.
Why Stronghold 4 slipped to April
Tannahill framed the move as a response to players. “We are heeding your words and taking more time to develop Stronghold 4 by shifting the game’s Early Access release date to April 20, 2027,” he said, adding that “it is absolutely the right thing to do for the game.”
The studio points to three reasons: more time to act on feedback from the Steam Next Fest demo, especially the skirmish and free build missions; dodging what Tannahill called “an incredibly busy holiday release schedule”; and plain development reality. “Game dev is hard to predict, and certain aspects of the game’s design and implementation have just taken longer than expected,” he wrote.
What the April 20 Early Access build includes
Firefly says the April launch will include a full story campaign, custom skirmish, a skirmish trail, and free build. The bigger addition is the economic campaign, which was originally planned as a later Early Access update. “Sim and economic gameplay is at the heart of Stronghold, so we weren’t loving the idea of launching without this,” Tannahill said, confirming it will now be there on April 20.
For longtime fans of the series, that is the real upside here. The economic missions have been a staple of Stronghold since the original, and launching Early Access without them would have left a hole in the castle-sim half of the game.
Stronghold 4 so far
RCG covered the Stronghold 4 reveal back in September, when Firefly brought the numbered series back after 15 years with a later 2026 target. That window is now gone, but the studio still plans to keep adding content through Early Access ahead of version 1.0. Stronghold 4 launches into Steam Early Access on PC on April 20, 2027.
