ArenaNet is putting new downloadable content on the original Guild Wars for the first time in almost two decades. Guild Wars Afterlife launches Jan. 13, 2027 on PC, Steam, the Apple App Store and Google Play, the studio announced, with prepurchase live now.
Players are called to the isle of Xotecha deep in the Mists to join the Order of the Moonless Night, shepherds watching over the Unformed — a jungle of shared dreams where memories take form. Lost souls are flooding in, a cult is meddling, and spirits that linger too long risk becoming Nightmares of pure rage.
The Unformed is an ever-changing dungeon: after a starting loadout, each run weaves different maps, encounters and bosses. A new skill-drafting system lets you pick abilities from any profession as you go, not just your primary and secondary. Completing runs unlocks both dungeon-only bonuses and permanent rewards you can take outside Xotecha, and the story advances with each venture.
Afterlife requires Guild Wars Reforged to play. Prepurchase is $23.99 (USD/EUR; may vary by platform) and includes the ancestral Vestments of the Order costume immediately; the standard price at launch is $29.99. ArenaNet credits the Reforged revival — including mobile and a partnership with 2weeks — for making a fresh DLC viable on a 21-year-old game.
Key features on the announcement page stress skill-drafting combat, a dynamic dungeon of jungles, cenotes and floating ruins, an all-new Xotecha story, Ancient Golems and Nightmares tied to the Cult of Odran, and the option to run the Unformed with friends or henchmen. Permanent rewards outside the dungeon are meant to make Afterlife matter even when you leave the Mists.
Classic PC worlds keep getting second lives lately, from remasters like Thief: The Dark Project Remastered landing Dec. 3 to surprise DLC on games that spent years in maintenance mode. For Guild Wars veterans, Jan. 13 is the first real chance in a generation to take existing characters into brand-new Mists content instead of another nostalgia patch. ArenaNet says the DLC exists because of the Reforged community — and the trailer is the studio’s loudest invitation yet to come back before early 2027.
