Nintendo pushed system software version 23.0.0 to both Nintendo Switch 2 and the original Nintendo Switch family on September 10, 2026, per patch notes carried by IGN and Nintendo Life.
On Switch 2 only, the headline additions are locked carefully: VRR (variable refresh rate) output in TV/docked mode when both the software and the TV support it, and only after a Nintendo Switch 2 Dock firmware update; a complete system transfer between two Switch 2 consoles (save data, screenshots, and related data); and a new Quick Settings toggle for Handheld Mode Boost under System → Switch Software Operation Mode settings. Handheld Mode Boost itself is not new here — this update only adds the Quick Settings on/off control (and related controller tweaks). VRR is not claimed for the original Switch, OLED, or Lite, and this desk is not saying every game already outputs VRR.
On the original Switch, 23.0.0 is narrower: Virtual Game Card settings on the HOME Menu list, temporary Play with Online License when a virtual game card cannot be ejected from another console, and general stability work. There is no docked VRR, no Switch 2↔Switch 2 complete transfer, and no Handheld Boost Quick Settings toggle on those older systems.
Switch 2 also picks up GameChat join-list and screen-size tweaks, Portuguese (Brazil) accessibility language options, per-TV audio save behavior, Video Output Information / VRR settings under Display, Mii QR sharing and editor BGM, aggregated play-time across consoles for the same software, and other QoL items listed in the full notes. Welcome Tour’s VRR minigame becomes fully playable in TV mode once the dock is updated, underscoring that software support still matters.

What we are not saying: no VRR on OLED/Lite/original Switch; no VRR without TV support, game/software support, and the dock update; no claim that all games already have VRR; no claim this is the first-ever Switch→Switch 2 transfer path; and no claim that Handheld Boost itself debuts in 23.0.0.
