Arrowhead Game Studios has no plans to make Helldivers 3 unless a sequel would be different enough to live alongside Helldivers 2, according to the studio’s chief creative officer, Johan Pilestedt. He made the comments in an interview with Rock Paper Shotgun, as reported by Push Square.
“The biggest competitor to a Helldivers 3 would be Helldivers 2,” Pilestedt told Rock Paper Shotgun. “It only makes sense to make a distinct sequel if it’s so different that both games can exist side by side. For now, making Helldivers 2 better every day makes way more sense than throwing away its momentum.”
According to Pilestedt, roughly 95% of Arrowhead is still working on Helldivers 2, while a small team explores something new for the studio’s next, unannounced project. He described the players as the actual engine of the game, arguing that a sequel is unnecessary while the community stays active. A sequel could make more sense if players stopped showing up, he suggested.
The stance echoes earlier comments from Arrowhead’s chief executive officer, Shams Jorjani, who has said the studio could keep working on Helldivers 2 indefinitely. The game remains in active development on PlayStation 5 and PC, most recently with its switch from GameGuard to Easy Anti-Cheat.
