Betsy Braddock’s New X-Men Codename Is Butterfly

Comics

Betsy Braddock has a new business card. Marvel Executive Editor Tom Brevoort confirmed that in Christopher Yost and Tony S. Daniel’s Maximum X-Men, Betsy will be called Butterfly rather than Psylocke or Captain Britain, according to Bleeding Cool.

The series launches December 2, 2026. In the wake of Avengers: Armageddon, Storm and Wolverine put together a squad to handle global threats while the Avengers are sidelined. Brevoort’s roster list includes Bishop, Colossus, Iceman, Firestar, Justice and Betsy under the Butterfly name.

The choice leans into one of Betsy’s oldest visual trademarks: the telepathic butterfly aura that has followed her through Claremont-era X-Men, the Kwannon body swap and her later Captain Britain run. Kwannon remains Psylocke, which closes the usual name-fight before solicits can reopen it.

Why the team exists

Brevoort framed Maximum X-Men as a direct outgrowth of Chip Zdarsky’s Avengers: Armageddon. With Earth’s Mightiest Heroes disbanded, mutants step into Avengers-scale crises. The first issue’s solicit even teases the Annihilation Wave arriving on Earth.

Earlier marketing had still listed Betsy as Psylocke, so the Butterfly confirmation is the clean-up pass. Marvel’s post-Armageddon year is filling up fast. RCG covered more of that slate when Bendis and Sorrentino’s Magneto: End of Days led the House of Ideas panel.

December 2 is when Butterfly officially joins the flight plan.

Betsy has been Psylocke, Captain Britain and a few things in between, which is why a clean new codename is useful housekeeping before Maximum X-Men hits stands. Butterfly keeps the psychic motif without stepping on Kwannon’s current claim to Psylocke. Brevoort’s Substack comments also tip that Firestar and Justice are getting real attention on this squad, not cameo seats. A December 2 launch puts the book in the holiday shopping window with an Annihilation-scale threat on the first-issue solicit, which is an aggressive way to introduce Earth’s mightiest mutants.
