Mike Baron and Pat Broderick Ride Into Weird Western Horror With Bronze Star in January

ComicsA dusty frontier mining town at night under a full moon, with an abandoned mine entrance glowing faintly on the hillside.

Two veteran creators are heading into monster country. American Mythology Press is launching Bronze Star #1, a new weird western by writer Mike Baron and artist Pat Broderick, in its January 2027 solicitations, Bleeding Cool reported.

The story follows Harley Brogden, a wanted gunslinger running from his past, who rides into Cobb’s Gap, a dying mining town with a terrible secret. People who enter the town’s abandoned silver mine never come back, and Sheriff Stjepin Dukic carries a curse that turns him into a monster under the full moon.

When Brogden takes a deputy’s badge, he finds out there are things in the West far deadlier than outlaws. American Mythology pitches the series as a collision of six-shooters, werewolves and supernatural horror, describing it as “The Good, The Bad and The Ugly meets H.P. Lovecraft.”

Baron is an Eisner Award winner best known for co-creating Nexus and Badger, and he has also written Deadman, The Punisher and The Flash. Broderick’s long career includes Micronauts, Captain Atom and Firestorm, and the publisher also points to his work on Creature Commandos.

Weird westerns have a long history in comics, from Jonah Hex’s supernatural detours to modern horror-western hybrids, and the pairing of a cursed lawman with a haunted mine gives Bronze Star a classic setup. Baron and Broderick bring decades of experience with genre-bending action to the mix.

Bronze Star #1 has four covers. Broderick draws Cover A, Anthony Gonzales-Clark draws Cover B, and two limited editions use Broderick’s art: a virgin art cover limited to 350 copies and a black-and-white Century edition limited to 100.

The book fits American Mythology’s long run of horror and western titles. The publisher’s January solicits also include Contest of Creatures #1, a monster battle book, along with a Fright Night variant and a mystery pack of western horror back issues.

January 2027 is shaping up as a busy month for new launches, with Vault also starting its monthly Dungeon Crawler Carl comic that month.
