ComicsDC Cancels Most of Dan Quintana's Glow-in-the-Dark Halloween Variants, Bleeding Cool Reports

DC has pulled most of the Dan Quintana Halloween glow-in-the-dark cardstock variant covers it had lined up for October and November, according to Bleeding Cool. The outlet reports that DC has cancelled at least six of the covers and kept only the first two.

Bleeding Cool lists eight Quintana glow-in-the-dark variants that DC originally solicited. The two it says are still going ahead are Batman #14 Cover I, listed at $7.99 for October 21, and Supergirl #18 Cover E, listed at $6.99 for November 11.

The six covers Bleeding Cool reports as cancelled are:

  • Catwoman #92 Cover F
  • Wonder Woman #38 Cover F
  • Harley Quinn #67 Cover F
  • Justice League Unlimited #24 Cover G
  • Poison Ivy #49 Cover F
  • Zatanna #7 Cover E

Bleeding Cool gives no reason for the cancellations, and DC has not commented publicly. When RCG checked Friday afternoon, no retailer notice or DC statement confirming the list had turned up, so the full count rests on Bleeding Cool’s report for now.

Bleeding Cool calls Quintana one of the most in-demand cover artists in the industry. The outlet notes that one of Quintana’s original oil paintings for an Absolute Batman cover sold at Heritage Auctions for $100,000, and that a custom Absolute Batman sketch cover later set a Whatnot record at $18,550. It describes him as a self-taught, Los Angeles-based artist whose credits include Something Is Killing the Children, Heavy Metal, Vampire Hunter D, Universal Monsters, DCeased and Justice League Dark.

The cancellations land in a month when DC is still pushing glow-in-the-dark covers elsewhere, including one shown at New York Comic Con for Superman’s Night Shift arc. Collectors who preordered any of the six affected Quintana covers will want to check with their shops on what is still coming.
