Sonic X Shadow Generations has crossed 3 million units sold worldwide, Sega announced on Oct. 26. The publisher says the total includes physical copies and digital downloads across every platform the game is on.

The milestone arrives right around the game’s second birthday. Sonic X Shadow Generations launched on Oct. 25, 2024 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC, and it later arrived on Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5, 2025. The game was reported to have passed 2 million units in January 2025, so the package has kept selling steadily since. It has also comfortably outsold the original Sonic Generations, which Sega said had reached 1.85 million about five months after its 2011 launch.

The game bundles two experiences. Sonic Generations is a full remaster of the 2011 greatest-hits adventure, which mixes 3D and 2D takes on classic stages, with upgraded visuals and extra content. Shadow Generations is a brand-new campaign starring Shadow the Hedgehog, with its own stages, new powers and a story that digs into his past.

Sega notes that the game was localized into 13 languages to reach players around the world, with voices in Japanese, English, French, Italian, German and Spanish. The company also pointed to the broader health of the series, saying the Sonic franchise has now passed 1.77 billion units in sales and free-to-play downloads since the original Sonic the Hedgehog launched in 1991.

That success has spilled well beyond games, with Shadow’s popularity boosted by his role in the third live-action Sonic movie. For Sega, the takeaway is clear: remastered favorites paired with something new can keep selling for years, not months.

Older games finding big new audiences has been a theme lately, with Square Enix’s Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven passing 1 million sold. Sega says more Sonic surprises are coming as the series celebrates its 35th anniversary.
