Square Enix Holdings Co., Ltd. (Tokyo Stock Exchange code 9684) issued a timely disclosure on September 1, 2026 under the heading “Regarding Today’s Media Report.” The English PDF is the company’s first-party statement. A Sentaku magazine September issue article had reported that Square Enix might go private. Holdings answered in the present tense: the information was not announced by the Company, and “No consideration is currently being given within the Company to taking the Company private.”
That sentence is a formal denial of an internal going-private process. It is not a no-comment. It does not deny that outsiders might be interested. The PDF does not discuss a live bid, and it does not name any shareholder or describe anyone’s intentions.
Read the English timely disclosure (PDF). The matching Japanese filing sits on the same IR site. GamesIndustry.biz summarized the statement; some secondary roundups used an 8.3% stock move that does not match the official session close or the official intraday high.
On the Tokyo Stock Exchange, Square Enix shares closed September 1 at ¥3,161, up ¥206 or 6.97% from the August 31 close of ¥2,955. The intraday high was ¥3,294, which is 11.47% above that prior close. Volume was 5.82 million shares. Reuters’ figure of about 7% matches the close, not the high. On September 2 the stock closed at ¥2,972, giving back the previous session’s gain.
Activist investor 3D Investment Partners is not named in the September 1 PDF. The last EDINET large-shareholding amendment No. 12, filed March 3, 2026 for an obligation date of February 24, 2026, lists 68,107,177 shares, or 18.53%. Attribute that stake to the March filing. Do not treat it as a September 2026 live print, and do not treat 3D as a party taking the company private. The disclosure does not speak for 3D.
Square Enix remains a listed game publisher. The same week PlayStation scheduled back-to-back State of Play broadcasts, with the English show closing on Square Enix’s Final Fantasy VII Revelation. That rundown is our State of Play and State of Play Japan report. The broadcast plan is separate from the TSE filing.
What this story is not claiming: Square Enix did not deny outsider interest. There is no live bid on the record in this disclosure. This is not original reporting from Famitsu, Nikkei, or Bloomberg. The 8.3% figure is not the official high and not the close. The news is the present-tense statement that the company is not currently considering going private.
