At BlizzCon 2026 on September 12, 2026, Blizzard unveiled a new mainline StarCraft game — officially titled StarCraft, not StarCraft 3 on the box — as an open-world, story-driven sci-fi shooter targeting 2030. Variety attributes Blizzard language that the project is a brand-new game in the StarCraft universe set in the Koprulu Sector roughly 70 years after StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void, with more detail also covered in Polygon and Game Informer’s ceremony wraps.
Creative leadership is locked to Dan Hay (StarCraft GM / Creative Director on the project; ex-Far Cry leadership). Blizzard’s own early-development note, via Variety, says this is just the beginning, with gameplay reveals and world deep dives promised over the coming years — which means today’s package is a cinematic teaser only. This desk is not claiming gameplay was shown on stage as a playable demo package.
In a same-day Korean-media interview published by Inven Global, Hay described the current vision as a “box product”: a narrative-driven open-world shooter where players create and name a character and follow a story with a beginning, middle, and end. As currently envisioned, he said the team is not building a seasonal game, while noting development can still evolve. He also confirmed Protoss presence in the teaser (a structure in the deployment shot, not Terran or Zerg), stressed keeping Zerg/Protoss/Terran asymmetry, and framed mission intensity versus open-world scavenging as a soft pacing choice rather than a single punishing combat loop. Asked about a future RTS, Hay declined to announce other StarCraft projects beyond this title.
Calendar language stays at the 2030 year window only. Do not invent a spring season, day-and-date, platforms, first- vs third-person camera, multiplayer modes, or price. Pre-announce rumor threads stay out of the confirmed ship line unless first-party later locks them.
Why it matters: StarCraft’s first mainline step since Legacy of the Void (2015) is a genre pivot into open-world shooter territory rather than a straight RTS sequel, and Hay’s interview softens the live-service assumption by attributing a boxed, finite-story vision — for now. What we are not saying: no StarCraft 3 box title, no spring-2030 invent, no platforms or camera claim, no gameplay-shown claim, no locked “single-player forever” without the current-vision attribution, and no future-RTS announce.
