Stranger Than Heaven Trailer Sends Makoto Daito to Kokura

PlayStation

SEGA and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio have released the first story trailer for Stranger Than Heaven, and it starts at the very beginning. “Act 1: Kokura” follows Makoto Daito on the journey that brings him to Japan and sets him on the path that defines the rest of the game.

From stowaway to showman

The trailer opens with Daito leaving the United States to escape persecution. He stows away on a ship run by a merchant named Orpheus, bound for Japan, and meets a fellow stowaway, Yu Shinjo, along the way. When the pair arrive in Kokura, in Fukuoka, Daito runs straight into discrimination, and the trailer hints at how that experience pushes him toward life as a showman.

RGG Studio’s official site says this is the first of several story trailers, each tied to a different era of the game. Stranger Than Heaven moves across decades of Japanese history, so the trailers act as a guide to where each act takes place and who Daito is at that point in his life.

A Japanese-language version of the trailer is also up on RGG Studio’s official channel, and Gematsu has more details on the story setup.

Release details

Stranger Than Heaven launches on January 15, 2027 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC through Steam and the Microsoft Store. It will also be available through Game Pass on day one.

The game is RGG’s first new property in years outside Yakuza and Like a Dragon, and it has been building interest steadily since its reveal. RCG previously broke down the Stranger Than Heaven cast and release details. With launch about three months out, this trailer is the clearest look yet at how the studio plans to tell a story that spans so much time, starting with one man stepping off a ship in a city that does not want him.

Expect the next era trailers to roll out between now and January.
