Tenebris Somnia, the survival horror game that mixes 8-bit style pixel art with live-action film, is out now. Publisher New Blood Interactive and developer Saibot Studios launched it on October 16 for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Pixels and prosthetics
Created by Argentine filmmaker Andrés Borghi, Tenebris Somnia plays like a classic survival horror game in the vein of early Resident Evil and Silent Hill, but shrunk down to a 2D look closer to the NES era. Players explore, solve puzzles and fight creatures while carefully managing ammo and supplies.
The twist comes at key moments in the story, when the game cuts to live-action scenes shot with real actors and practical effects by a professional film crew. The story follows Julia, a young woman haunted by nightmares about the violent death of her former partner. When she goes to his home looking for answers, she starts to find that what happens in her dreams may be real.
“After nearly 4 years of game development and live action filming… Tenebris Somnia is OUT NOW,” New Blood wrote in its launch announcement on Steam. The publisher also updated the free demo and confirmed the game is Steam Deck verified.
Price
On the Steam store page, Tenebris Somnia is listed at $24.99, with a 20% launch discount bringing it to $19.99. Owners of New Blood’s earlier horror game FAITH can also find bundle offers, and the Steam version includes trading cards and Points Shop items.
New Blood has also asked players to avoid posting spoilers for about a week, which says a lot about how much of the experience depends on its surprises.
Retro-styled horror and action have had a strong month, with Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse Is Out Now Everywhere also tapping into old-school design. Tenebris Somnia takes a stranger route than most, pairing that pixel-era look with footage that looks like it came from a horror film.
