Gearbox Entertainment says the Borderlands series has now sold more than 100 million copies, a milestone that took the looter shooter franchise from its 2009 debut to today, and the studio is already “cooking hard on more Borderlands 4 content for next year.”
The figure comes from Gearbox’s own celebration post, as reported by Eurogamer and GamingBolt. It covers the whole series, not a single game.
Gearbox wants fans to steer what comes next
Gearbox used the milestone to say it is taking a “bigger look at the franchise as a whole,” asking players: “Where can we take it next? What characters do you want to spend more time with? What stories deserve a payoff?”
The studio called fan feedback a “huge part” of that process, but tempered expectations: “big plans take time, and we need some room to work. You can trust that we’ll talk more when the time is right.” Gearbox did not name a new game or give any dates.
Borderlands 4 Year 2 is coming
Borderlands 4 just wrapped its first year of post-launch support. September brought Story Pack 2: FL4K and the Last Resort, which added the second new Vault Hunter, Loveless the Hacker, alongside Bounty Pack 5: Amara and the Vile Shadows and its new boss rush activity. Gearbox says more Borderlands 4 content is planned for 2027, with details to come later.
Gearbox did not mention the Nintendo Switch 2 version, which, as we covered when Borderlands 4 on Switch 2 was put on pause, still has no new date.
