Sony’s PlayStation 5 just cleared another lifetime marker. The console has shipped 97.9 million units worldwide, the company said in results for the three months ended Sept. 30, 2026, Gematsu reports, while Marvel’s Wolverine has sold 2.4 million copies as of Nov. 4.

Quarterly hardware cooled as expected this late in a cycle: Sony shipped 2.6 million PS5 units in the quarter, down 0.9 million from the same period a year earlier. Software still grew. PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 titles combined moved 88.2 million copies in the quarter, up 7.9 million year over year, with 8.2 million of those first-party. Full-game digital downloads accounted for 78% of software sales, up six points.

PlayStation Network monthly active users hit 127 million as of Sept. 30 — up eight million year over year and a September record. Games & Network Services sales rose 9% and operating income jumped sharply, helped by cost reductions and pricing moves that offset higher memory costs.

On the next console, CFO Lin Tao said development is “progressing as scheduled” and that Sony intends to make “solid progress” preparing the next-generation platform in the fiscal year that starts April 2027, Video Games Chronicle reports. Memory quantity for that next fiscal year’s projected unit sales is aligned with suppliers. Investment in the new platform begins next fiscal year; a release date and price remain unannounced, consistent with earlier comments from CEO Hiroki Totoki.

Sony also raised its full-year Games & Network Services forecast, citing stronger third-party software — notably Grand Theft Auto 6 — plus first-party strength and cost improvements. Wolverine’s 2.4 million in roughly seven weeks after a mid-September launch is the loudest first-party proof point in the print.

The earnings land beside a PlayStation slate that is already reshuffling 2027 calendars, including Santa Monica’s God of War Laufey sliding to May 20, 2027. For now the corporate message is steadier than the ship dates: PS5 still expands the install base, software and MAUs are up, and PS6 work is on the internal clock Sony is willing to describe — without handing analysts a launch window.
