Zach Cregger's Resident Evil Hits $400M Worldwide, the Franchise's Biggest Film

Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil has reached $400 million at the worldwide box office, making it the highest-grossing film in the Resident Evil movie franchise, Variety reports.

The Sony reboot has earned $157.4 million in North America and $242.6 million overseas. That total tops 2016’s Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, which finished with $312 million globally, according to Variety.

Cregger’s biggest film yet

Resident Evil is also the biggest film of Cregger’s career. Variety notes it passes 2025’s Weapons, which made $270 million worldwide, and 2022’s Barbarian, which made $46 million.

The film opened in September to a series-best $60 million domestically and $108 million globally, beating the franchise’s previous opening record held by 2010’s Resident Evil: Afterlife. Strong reviews and audience scores kept it in theaters through October. China leads overseas markets with $71.4 million, followed by the United Kingdom at $19.4 million and Mexico at $12.7 million.

Variety puts the production budget at $75 million, so the movie should turn a solid profit for Sony. Weapons actor Austin Abrams stars as a medical courier fighting through a viral outbreak in Raccoon City. The result is a sharp turnaround from 2021’s Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, which made $42 million worldwide.

The $400 million mark adds to a run RCG has tracked for weeks, including the film’s China opening that pushed it past $320 million.
