PS5 QSSR AI Upscaling Hits Wolverine, Yotei

Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), a new AI upscaling library for the standard PlayStation 5, according to a PlayStation Blog post dated October 1, 2026 by graphics R&D principal engineer Daniel Craig. The first titles to use it — Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei — received patches the same day that add QSSR as an additional graphics option on base PS5.

QSSR is framed as a performance-tier offshoot of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), the AI upscaler that launched with PS5 Pro. Craig writes that PSSR’s computational demands made bringing that experience to base PS5 “impossible” until now. QSSR comes from Project Amethyst, Sony’s AI graphics collaboration with AMD, and leans on a streamlined neural network plus a hand-tuned PS5 implementation. Sony’s line: PSSR remains the “gold standard” on PS5 Pro; QSSR still delivers notable gains in image detail and temporal stability on the standard console.

Insomniac’s Mike Fitzgerald says QSSR adds pixel-level clarity in Madripoor, Shinjuku, and other Wolverine environments. Sucker Punch’s Jasmin Patry highlights fine-detail resolution and temporal stability that “hasn’t been possible on the PS5 console until now.” Sony says QSSR will be offered broadly to all PlayStation developers going forward.

For US base-PS5 owners, October 1 is a free graphics option in two PlayStation Studios flagships — useful context beside other same-week PlayStation multiplat beats already on RCG such as Ace Combat 8 Deluxe Early Access Is Live Now. This is not a PS5 Pro firmware exclusive and is not a claim that every PS5 game suddenly has QSSR.

What we are not saying: we are not claiming QSSR equals PSSR, inventing a system-wide automatic enable for every title, or dating the next third-party QSSR ships. Report QSSR live Oct. 1 in Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei, with broader developer availability promised.
